Assistant Coaching Staff

Jim Hammond is in his third season as an assistant coach with the Chowan University Men's Basketball Program.  He brings a wealth of experience, as a coach, teacher and recruiter to the program.
 
Prior to coming to Chowan, he was an assistant coach at Division I Norfolk State University.  He spent seven years there as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator
 
Hammond was the head basketball coach at Tiffin University, an NAIA and Division II school in Tiffin ,Ohio from 1987-97.. He was also the school's Head Tennis Coach from 1987-91 and Assistant Athletic Director from 1990-97.  Hammond is also active on the national basketball clinic and camp circuit, serving both as a guest speaker and organizer at many of these.  He is also currently a board member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Assistant Coaches Committee.
 
Hammond's teams at Tiffin were successful.  He led Tiffin to three NAIA national championship appearances in a five year span.  Under his direction, Tiffin on five occasions achieved rankings in the NAIA top ten, and won its first Mid- Ohio Conference Championship in 17 years. He was twice named the Conference Coach of the Year.  His players included three All- Americans, three who went on to play professionally, seven who are now college coaches and fifteen who are now high school coaches.  For his accomplishments, Hammond was inducted into the Tiffin University Sports Hall of Fame in the fall of 2002, and the Rolling Hills Schools (Ohio) Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in the spring of 1999.
 
Hammond's teaching skills aren't limited to the hardwood.  He was an instructor in Tiffin's Sport Management Department from 1988-97, teaching management and marketing classes.   Prior to that, he was a high school guidance counselor, assistant principal and successful high school coach in Ohio winning several league championships. Hammond also worked as a consultant for Global Strategies and Solutions and Sports Directions USA for two years.

Hammond earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.  He also holds two Master's in Education Degrees from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, one in Health and Physical Education and the other in Guidance and Counseling.

He and his wife, Amy, reside in Virginia Beach and have a daughter Leah, son in law Tom, and son Luke.
