The ceremony recognized students who excelled academically throughout the year while also demonstrating outstanding character and service both on campus and within the community. SPARTANBURG, S.C. -The Chowan University women's basketball team faced Lees-McRae College in the Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship Finals on Sunday evening. The appearance marked a historic moment for the Hawks, as it was the first time in program history that Chowan advanced to the Conference Carolinas Championship game and the program's first championship appearance in the NCAA Division II era. The last time the Hawks reached a conference championship game came during the 2003-04 season when Chowan advanced to the USA South Championship in the Division III era. Chowan set the tone early, scoring the first points of the contest and showing poise in the championship matchup. Lees-McRae built a lead of as many as seven points late in the first quarter, but the Hawks responded with two timely baskets to cut the deficit to two heading into the second quarter. The Hawks continued to battle in the second period rallying as the Bobcats would take a 27-24 lead heading into halftime. Chowan regained the advantage midway through the third quarter at the 3:29 mark following a successful tip-in. SPARTANBURG, S.C. -The Chowan University women's basketball team defeated No. 2 seed Barton College on Saturday evening in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship to advance to the finals. Sunday's appearance will mark the program's first-ever trip to the Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Finals since joining the league. Chowan jumped out in front of the Bulldogs early, scoring the first points of the game and maintaining control throughout the contest. Chowan built a 37-23 advantage by halftime and never looked back. The Hawks pushed their lead to its largest margin in the fourth quarter at the 1:14 mark, leading by 24 points at 80-56 before closing out the game with an 80-60 victory at the final buzzer. Chowan's success was fueled by limiting Barton's offense with strong defensive pressure while capitalizing on scoring opportunities on the offensive end to take control with efficiency. Entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed, the Hawks battled the Crusaders in a defensive showdown from start to finish.
