Box Score MORROW, GA- The Chowan University women's basketball team suffered a 77-50 loss to Clayton State University on Friday evening. The Hawks slide to 3-4 on the season after the setback while the Lakers improve to 5-1 on the year.
Alisha Mobley led the effort for Chowan with 10 points in the loss.
Danielle Weldon chipped in nine points while
Jordan Payne and
Jordan Pettaway added six points apiece.
Shaikeyla Jordan and Weldon each grabbed six rebounds (four offensive, two defensive).
Kayla Pryce led all players in the contest with 15 points for Clayton State. Andrea Benford and Tweety Hawkins followed with 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Tierra Johnson added 11 points and DeQuenna Moore tallied 10 points. Moore hauled in seven rebounds (two offensive, five defensive) for the Lakers.
Payne hit two free throws at the start of the first quarter to give Chowan an early 2-0 edge. With the scored tied 6-6, a layup by Hawkins sparked a 10-2 run for the Lakers, leaving Chowan trailing 16-8 at the close of the first quarter.
Clayton State held an 18-10 advantage at the 8:39 mark in the second quarter before a 14-3 run by the Lakers left the Hawks looking to recover from a 32-13 deficit. Chowan was unable to battle back and headed into halftime trailing 36-24.
The Hawks came out firing at the start of the third quarter. Mobley hit a layup and
Mercedes Tapia followed with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to seven points (36-29). With 7:30 on the clock and Clayton State leading 41-31, a free throw by Tierra Johnson led to a 16-0 run for the Lakers.
Dhyamond Crenshaw ended the scoring drought for the Hawks when she hit a free throw with 4:12 on the clock, but the Lakers kept the momentum alive and carried a 61-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Jessica Covington's layup with 7:05 left in the game gave Clayton State a 68-38 advantage, and their largest lead of the game (30 points). The Hawks were unable to recover in the remainder of the contest, and suffered the 77-50 setback.
Chowan hits the hardcourt again on Saturday when the Hawks take on No. 15 Armstrong State University. Tip-off is slated for 1:30pm.
