CU Athletics to Host Annual Play4Kay Game

MURFREESBORO - The CU athletic department is proud to host the WBCA's Play4Kay (formerly known as PinkZone) game in conjunction with the women's basketball program on Saturday, February 15th. This is the sixth year that the women's basketball program will host the event, which is intended to raise cancer awareness along with money dedicated for cancer research.  Chowan is set to host the Lady Bulldogs from Bowie State University in a 2:00pm tip off at the Helms Center.

The women's team and the athletic department is working with the campus and the community to promote the game to include in-game promotions, giveaways, and a special survivor's walk at halftime. This year's commemorative ball tosser will be Ms. Yvonne Stewart, a member of the Roanoke-Chowan community, a teacher at Willis Hare Elementary School, and recent cancer survivor.

Help the Hawks "PINK OUT" the gym. All fans that wear PINK to the game that night will be admitted free of charge.

The Chowan University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be selling originally designed t-shirts for the event. T-Shirts will be sold at at a cost of $10.00. All proceeds from the t-shirts will benefit the Play4Kay Cancer Fund and the V Foundation. The CU SAAC will also conduct in-game fundraisers with the proceeds going to the same foundations. There is a limited number of youth t-shirts also available.

T-Shirts can be ordered by emailing
Meredith Long, longm@chowan.edu or (252) 398-6468.

Nationwide the Play4Kay campaign raised over $1.5 million in 2013, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations, and saw 56+ schools break attendance records at their event. It is expected that nearly 1,400 schools across the nation will participate in this year's event.

Last year Chowan raised upwards of $500 during the Play4Kay game. All donations benefited the Kay Yow Breast Cancer Awareness Fund and the V Foundation.

The athletic department is seeking cancer survivors to join us in a halftime recognition on the 15th. Survivors come in many forms, from family and friends, to personal diagnosis. The athletic department is hoping to have active community participation to help raise cancer awareness and funds for cancer research. To take part in this event please contact Meredith Long at longm@chowan.edu or (252) 398-6468.
