Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball game picked up their second straight win of the season with a 81-49 win over Virginia University of Lynchburg on Tuesday evening. The Hawks build momentum heading into the season with a 2-0 record while the Dragons slip to 1-2 on the season with the setback.
Josh Mellette led all players in the contest with 16 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive, five defensive), earning his first double-double of the season.
Kortez Smith and
Dauson Womack each notched 14 points in the win for the Blue and White. Smith notched four steals on the evening while
Josh Mellette tallied two blocks for the Hawks.
Lawrence Robinson paced the Dragons with 10 points while Jacob Knight added nine points to aid the effort. Devon McKoy and Adrian Saunders scored seven points apiece in the loss.
Bethel got the Hawks on the board with a three-pointer to start the contest. Mellette's jumper gave the Hawks a 5-0 cushion at the start at the first half. Chowan maintained the lead for the entire first half and built their lead to as many as 19 points (40-21) at the 3:10 mark with a three-pointer by
Mark Anthony Buright.
Chowan continued to dominate the contest well into the second half.
Trevis Buckhanon's free throw at the 6:48 mark gave the Hawks a 31 point lead, which was their largest of the contest at that point.
Andrew Lopez hit a three pointer with two minutes left in the contest to confirm the 81-49 win for the Hawks.
Chowan takes the court again on Friday when they host Mid-Atlantic Christian University. Game time is slated for 7:30pm in the Helms Center.
