Hawks Seal Series Sweep with 12-3 Win over Shaw

Evan Hart notched a career-high 11 strikeouts in Sunday's win against Shaw.
MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team swept Shaw University after winning the series finale 12-3.  Chowan improves to 16-25 on the season and 8-7 in CIAA play after Sunday's win while Shaw falls to 8-25 and 1-16 in league play.

Chowan started the scoring right from the start in the first inning after Josh Catalano scored on a Shaw fielding error. 
Chowan scored again in the bottom of the second inning after Evan Holton led off the inning with a triple and later scored on another Bear error.   The Hawks pulled ahead 5-0 in the home half of the third after Holton blasted a three run homerun to left field with Anthony Waldner and Ryan Moore on base. 

Shaw rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit down to 5-2.  Two walks in the inning started the rally for the Bears.  Jerrell Harvey's RBI single put the Bears on the board.  Another two out single by Brian Gray scored the second run of the inning.  After walking a third batter in the inning, with two outs, Evan Hart regained focus and notched his 10th strikeout of the contest, leaving three Bears stranded.

A seven run fifth inning allowed Chowan to take a commanding lead.  Evan Holton started the bottom of the fifth inning with a drop third strike that allowed him to get to third on a throwing error by the catcher.  Another drop third strike allowed Holton to score on the throw.  Colby Wiggins drew a one out walk and later scored on Austin Hall's triple to left field.  William Ward's sacrifice bunt allowed Hall to score but another errant throw allowed Ward to move to third. 

An error by the Bears and Waldner's sacrifice fly pushed the Hawks to a 10-2 advantage.  Anthony Waldner sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Catalano pushed the Hawk to a 10-2 advantage.  Ryan Moore drew a walk in the inning and scored on John Hunter's 2-run homer to left center for a 12-2 lead.

Shaw scored a run off a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth, but the damage was done. 

Evan Hart picked up the win throwing six strong innings, giving up two runs off four hits and three walks.  Hart struck out a career-high 11 batters, five of those looking.

Austin McGhee pitched efficiently in relief of Hart throwing two shut-out innings striking out four and one walk.  Josh Barmoy closed out the ninth on the mound.   

Shaw's starter AJ Williams took the loss on the mound.  Williams allowed four earned runs in the contest.  The Bears struggled defensively in the loss after making eight errors in the field. 

Colby Wiggins paced the Hawks offensively with three hits including a double.  Holton picked up a triple and a homerun with three RBIs in the win.  Waldner, Moore, and Hunter each grabbed two hits and two RBIs in the contest. 

Chowan travels to Lincoln, PA. to face the Lions in a three-game series on April 13th and 14th .  The series will conclude the regular season for the Hawks.
