LINCOLN, PA- The Chowan University softball team worked their way back to .500 on the season and remained undefeated in CIAA play after earning 12-0 and 13-2 victories over Lincoln University (PA) on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 18-18 with the wins, and move to 11-0 in league play.
The Hawks used a five run first inning to take control of the contest, using four hits and an error by the Lady Lions to grab a five run lead. Chowan continued to build momentum in the top of the second using a sacrifice fly from
Liz Hipple, and RBI single from
Courtney Baker and a two run double from
Kelly Hardison to pull ahead 9-0.
Alora Lincoln held Lincoln's (PA) offense at-bay, and the Hawks went to work again in the top of the third, tacking on two additional runs in the frame thanks to a two run homerun to center field from Baker.
Lauren Astengo doubled to right field in the top of the fifth to score Hipple to make the score 12-0.
Seven Hawks combined for 13 hits, with
Courtney Baker,
Liz Hipple,
Kelly Hardison, and
Lacey Wildeboer collecting two hits apiece in the win. Baker knocked in three RBI for the Hawks.
Lincoln held the Lady Lions to just one hit in the first game, and collected six strikeouts in the shut out win.
Chowan continued their offensive attack in the nightcap by pounding out 15 hits over the course of the afternoon.
Amber Matthews paced the Hawks at the plate going 3-4 with 3 RBI in the 13-2 win. Hipple was 3-4 with two RBI, and Astengo, Baker and
Tori Cragan were all 2-3 in the contest.
With a 3-0 lead, the Hawks exploded in the top of the fourth to score six runs off six hits after RBI singles from
Shelby Pendleton, Wildeboer, and Hipple, a two run double from Matthews, and
Hannah Joyce's RBI groundout.
Hipple's two run double, a wild pitch and Baker's RBI single in the top of the fifth gave the Hawks four more runs in the contest. The Lady Lions scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth due to a Hawk fielding error.
Courtney Groce forced a fly out to left field to give Chowan the 13-2 win.
Groce went the distance on the mound for the Hawks, and gave up just two hits in the contest while striking out three. Erin Rucker took both losses on the mound for the Lady Lions.
The Hawks travel to Bowie State on Sunday for another CIAA Northern Division doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm.
