Hawks Dominate in CIAA Semi-Final Game against Winston-Salem, Advance to Championship Game

Leigh Ward collected three hits and two RBI on Friday.
PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University softball team stunned the Winston-Salem State University Rams 9-2 on Friday afternoon.  The win puts the Hawks in the driver's seat for Saturday's Championship as Chowan will face either Winston-Salem State or Virginia State out of the loser's bracket.

The Hawks set the tone right from the beginning.  Leigh Ward drew a walk to lead off the game, and stole second.  Liz Hipple laced a triple to right center to score Ward to give Chowan an early 1-0 lead.

The Hawks capitalized on an eight run third inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead.  Tori Cragan drove in two runs with a base hit to center field.  Shelby Pendleton followed with a single to left to score Lacey Wildboer to make the score 4-0.  Ward added a two-run double to give Chowan a 6-0 advantage.  A Lady Ram fielding error, and RBI singles from Courtney Baker and Wildeboer put the Hawks ahead 9-0 heading into the bottom of the third.

Winston-Salem State scored two runs in the bottom of the third to get on the board, but the deficit was too much to overcome.  Both teams failed to score for the remainder of the contest.

Alora Lincoln earned the win for the Hawks on the mound.  She tossed seven innings and scattered nine hits throughout the contest while striking out four.  Brittany Lane took the loss for the Lady Rams.
