MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team picked up two CIAA wins on Saturday afternoon after defeating the Lady Falcons of St. Augustine's University and the Fayetteville State University Broncos.
Chowan University grabbed two wins as the host institution of the CIAA Round-Up. The Hawks outlasted St. Augustine's University 14-6 in their first game on Saturday, before grabbing an 8-0 decision over the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University.
Amber Matthews' RBI single scored
Lacey Wildeboer to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage in the home half of the second. The Lady Falcons quickly answered back to score three runs off three hits and two Hawk errors. Chowan tied the game in their next at-bat when
Tori Cragan slammed a two-run homerun to knot the game 3-3.
Cragan's two-run RBI in the bottom of the fifth scored
Liz Hipple and
Leigh Ward to give the Hawks a 5-3 lead. Cragan scored later in the inning after a ground-out from
Shelby Pendleton to put the Hawks ahead 6-3. The Lady Falcons stuck again in their half of the sixth when Michelle Shackelford doubled to left field to score Kristen Long. Taylor Walters followed up with a two-run triple to right center to knot the game 6-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The Hawks rallied to score eight runs off eight hits in the home half of the inning. Chowan started the inning off with singles from Amber Mattews,
Hannah Joyce, and
Leigh Ward. All three scored off a Lady Falcon error to move the score to 9-6. Cragan's single scored
Liz Hipple on the next play.
Kelly Hardison and
Courtney Baker each knocked an RBI before
Megan Wade's two-run single ended the contest with a 14-6 win for the Hawks.
Courtney Groce picked up the win for the Hawks on the mound.
The Hawks pounded out 12 hits over the course of five innings, and
Courtney Groce held the Lady Broncos to four hits en route to the 8-0 win in the nightcap.
Tori Cragan gave the Hawks their first run with an RBI single through the left side to score
Leigh Ward.

Shelby Pendleton's infield single allowed Cragan to score to give Chowan an early 3-0 lead in the home half of the first.
Lacey Wildeboer started off the fourth inning with a bunt single and later scored on a fielder's choice. Hardison's single up the middle followed by a throwing Lady Bronco throwing error cleared the bases and made the score 7-0.
Courtney Baker capped off the decisive inning with an RBI single to score Hardison.
The Hawks will resume play on Sunday at 11:00am against Shaw University.
