MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings against Winston-Salem State, but the Rams came out on top of a 15-11 decision on Monday afternoon in CIAA play.
Monday's game picked up where it left on Sunday, in the top of the sixth with a runner on first and two outs. The Rams extended their 6-5 lead by scoring two runs off an RBI single and a Hawk error to pull ahead 8-5.
Josh Catalano drove in
Evan Seymour with an RBI single to right center in the home half of the sixth to make the score 8-6. A three-run eighth inning by Winston-Salem State after an RBI single from Aaron Jones and a two-run double by Tyler Hickernell gave the Rams a commanding 11-6 advantage.
Down but not out, Chowan rallied in the bottom of the ninth after
Evan Holton's RBI single, and two-run base knock from
Colby Wiggins and Evan's two-run single to center field sent the game into extra innings with the score 11-11.
In the Rams' next at-bat, Tyler Hickernell belted a three-run homerun to left center to give Winston-Salem State a 14-11 edge. A wild pitch by
Jeff Vera allowed Rafael Gonzalez to score before the Rams closed out their half of the inning with a 15-11 lead.
Chowan was unable to score in their final at-bat resulting in the 15-11 win for Winston-Salem State.
Jeff Vera took the loss on the mound for the Hawks while Seth Mahaffey earned the win for the Rams.
The Hawks fall to 12-21 on the season and 4-5 in CIAA play. They travel to Mount Olive College for a nonconference doubleheader on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 4:00pm.
