Warriors Take Two from Hawks

Leigh Ward was 3-4 at the plate in the nightcap against East Stroudsburg.
MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team dropped two games against East Stroudsburg University in a nonconference on a snow flurried Thursday afternoon.  The Hawks fell 15-2 in the first game, before taking a 4-1 loss in the nightcap. Chowan falls to 12-16 on the season while East Stroudsburg improves to 9-6. 

East Stroudsburg jumped on the Hawks quickly in the first game scoring 10 runs in the first inning, taking advantage of five Chowan errors and collecting four hits. Lacey Wildeboer took the loss for the Hawks on the mound, and was relieved by Courtney Groce in the first inning.

Chowan fought back but could not overcome the 10-run deficit.  Chowan scored their only runs of the contest in the bottom of the first inning off a two-run RBI single by Amber Matthews

ESU added runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. ESU's Cara Wood put the game out of reach with a 2-run homer to left field extending the lead to 15-2 where the score would stand for the remainder of the contest.  Warrior starter Amanda Carlin held Chowan at-bay allowing four hits through five innings to pick up her fourth win of the season.  Chowan allowed a season-high six errors in game one.

The night cap showed better defense for the Hawks, as they kept the Warriors off the board until the sixth inning.  Chowan put a score on the board in the bottom of the third inning for an early 1-0 lead.    Leigh Ward grabbed the lead for the Hawks scoring on an error by the left fielder off Hipple's bat.

Chowan maintained the lead until the top of the sixth inning.  ESU took the lead 2-1 thanks to singles by Cara McNeil and Kasey Meckes along with a Hawk fielding error.

ESU increased their lead in the top of the seventh inning to 4-1 off two solo homers by Kacie Killeen and Rebecca Smith.  Allison Mende picked up the win on the mound for the Warriors.  Laura Suits picked up the save. 

Alora Lincoln pitched seven complete innings allowing four runs (two earned) off six hits while striking out three.  

Leigh Ward went 3-4 at the plate in the night cap.  Kayla BradyLacey Wildeboer, Liz HippleHannah Joyce and, Shelby Pendleton picked up hits for the Hawks over the course of the afternoon.

The Hawks lace up their cleats again on Friday against their third PSAC opponent in as many days.  Chowan will take on Millersville University in a non-conference doubleheader with first pitch slated for 2pm.
