MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team battled for a split with Lock Haven University on Wednesday afternoon. After being held hitless in the first game's 7-1 loss, the Hawks fought back to take the nightcap 4-2.
Chowan scored in the home half of the first in the first game of the afternoon, using a sacrifice fly from
Courtney Baker to score
Liz Hipple who reached after being hit-by-pitch. The Hawks failed to score in the remainder of the contest while the Lady Eagles used the second, fifth, and seventh frames to score seven runs en-route to the win.
Brittany Favazza, Briana Jennings, and Sarah Schwalm each were 2-4 in the win for Lock Haven. Jennings paced the Lady Eagles with three RBI.
Alora Lincoln took the loss on the mound for the Hawks in game one after giving up 10 hits and seven earned runs. She collected four strikeouts in the loss.
Sarah Morse held Chowan hitless in the nightcap until the Hawks' offense came alive in the fourth inning. Down 1-0, Chowan strung together four consecutive singles to knot the game 1-1 after an infield single from
Lauren Astengo. With the bases loaded,
Leigh Ward and
Lacey Wildeboer used RBI groundouts to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
Courtney Baker gave the Hawks some cushion after belting a solo homerun to right center, extending the lead to 4-1.
The Lady Eagles' made the score 4-2 after Nikki Weaknecht scored on a fielder's choice in the top of the seventh, but
Courtney Groce shut the door, forcing a groundout to second to end the game.
Groce went the distance for the Hawks in the second game, surrendering two earned runs off eight hits. Morse earned the loss for Lock Haven.
Kelly Hardison and
Hannah Joyce each went 2-3 in the second game. Weaknecht was 2-3 for the Lady Eagles in the loss.
The Hawks improve to 12-14 after Wednesday's games. They will take the field again on Thursday as they host East Stroudsburg in a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:00pm.
