MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team stole two away from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in dramatic fashion. Chowan split the four game series taking both games on Saturday afternoon 8-7 and 7-6 to avenge two one-run losses from Saturday. Chowan won game one in the 12
th inning off of an error and the night cap on a pinch hit walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Chowan improves to 11-17 on the season, while IUP falls to 8-6.
Tyler Burden picked up his first win of the season in relief of
Evan Hart and
Carter Siweck. Burden pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one. Hart started the game on the hill for the Hawks pitching 4.1 innings giving up three runs off six hits, walking and punching out four. Siweck pitched 5.1 innings giving up three runs off seven hits, two walks and three strike outs.
Chowan started the scoring in game one in the bottom half of the second inning.
Drew Mason started the frame with a walk.
Evan Holton singled to left field.
Brett Allen bunted over Mason and Holton to put the Hawks into scoring position.
Colby Wiggins hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Mason for the Hawks first run.
Chowan scored again in the bottom of the third. Base knocks by
Tyler Burden,
Josh Catalano, and
Ryan Moore loaded the bases for Mason. Mason hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Burden for a 2-0 advantage.
IUP used a four run fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Hawks responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning after an RBI double from
Evan Holton.
Down 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh,
Colby Wiggins singled to right field to score the tying run to send the game into extra innings.
IUP started their attack in the top of the 10
th inning taking the score to 7-4. Three singles, a double and a sacrifice fly drove in three for the Crimson Hawks.
Chowan answered the call with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Tyler Burden drew a walk to load the bases for Catalano. Catalano singled into right field scoring Wiggins and
Anthony Waldner.
Ryan Moore singled to left field scoring Burden for the tying run.
The 12
th inning was the decisive inning for the Hawks.
Waldner doubled down the left field line to start the frame. Two ground outs pushed Waldner to third. With two outs and the game winning run on third base
Ryan Moore hit a sharp ground ball to third base allowing Waldner to score for the win.
The night cap featured much of the same for both clubs in the one run victory for Chowan. Troy Foster singled followed by Aaron Lupia hit an RBI single to score Ryan Uhl for the first run for IUP.
Moore singled to plate Catalano for a 1-1 tie and IUP plated two runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 advantage.
Moore started the Chowan rally in the bottom half of the third inning with a solo homerun to left field, his second of the season. Mason reached on an error by the shortstop.
Evan Holton singled to third base.
Brandon Mack roped the first pitch into left field scoring Mason for another tie.
Colby Wiggins doubled to centerfield retaking the lead at 4-3.
Tyler Burden hit a sacrifice fly to right field to push the Hawk lead to 5-3 scoring Wiggins.
IUP regained the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Dylan Tice tripled to right field. Two walks in the inning loaded the bases for Lupia. Lupia was hit by pitch to tie things up at 5-5. John Beatty sacrifice fly to left field allowed the Crimson Hawks to take a 6-5 advantage into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Will Gurganus picked up his first win of the season throwing a scoreless top of the seventh striking out two and walking two.
Brandon Mack hit in his second RBI of the game with a base hit to center field scoring
Drew Mason and tying things up at 6-6. Wiggins worked out a walk to put Mack into scoring position.
John Hunter placed a hit into shallow left field to score Mack from second for a walk-off win for the Hawks.
Josh Catalano went 5-10 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored over the course of the afternoon.
Ryan Moore paced the Hawks at the plate going 5-11 with three RBIs.
Colby Wiggins went 4-8 with three RBIs and three doubles.
Brandon Mack went 3-4 in the night cap with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Anthony Waldner finished the day at the plate 5-8.
Chowan goes on the road against USC-Aiken in a mid-week series on Tuesday and Wednesday before returning back to CIAA play against Winston-Salem State on Saturday and Sunday, March 23
rd-24
th for a three game series.
