MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team won their third game of the weekend in thrilling fashion over the Shaw University Lady Bears on Sunday afternoon.
Liz Hipple ripped a single to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Hawks to the 8-7 victory over Shaw. With the win, Chowan improves to 6-13 overall and 3-0 in CIAA action while the Lady Bears slip to 6-11 overall and 1-2 in the league.
The Hawks used
Courtney Baker's two-run double and a Shaw error take an early 3-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. Sheniqua Fahie doubled and knocked in Shanice Anderson and Kemeshia Braithewaite in the third to push the score 3-2. The Lady Bears took a 6-3 lead in the fourth, scoring off a sacrifice fly from Erica Lafrades, an RBI double from Shanice Anderson and a two run homerun by Cortnee Kelly.
A four-run, eight hit fourth inning put Chowan in the driver's seat with a narrow 7-6 advantage. Down but not out, the Lady Bears plated a run in the top of the sixth when Cortnee Kelly's single scored Shanice Anderson. The Hawks were unable to score in the home half of the seventh, forcing the game into international tie breaker.
Alora Lincoln silenced the Lady Bear bats in the top of the eighth setting the stage for
Liz Hipple. With
Hannah Joyce on third base and one out, Hipple singled through the right side allowing the Hawks to earn the walk-off victory.
Lincoln earned the win on the mound for the Hawks after coming in in-relief for
Courtney Groce in the fourth. Sheniqua Fahie took the loss for the Lady Bears.
The Hawks travel to Salisbury, NC on March 14
th to take on Livingstone in another CIAA crossover match before returning home to host the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State on March 14
th. The doubleheader is slated to being at 12:00pm.
