Bulldogs Nip Hawks on the Road

Brandon Mack went 3-6 in Wednesday's doubleheader against Wingate.
WINGATE, NC- The Chowan University moved to 1-5 on the season after taking two losses to Wingate University on Wednesday afternoon.  The Hawks dropped the first game of the doubleheader 12-2, and fell 4-0 in the nightcap. 
 
The Hawks got on the board first in the contest, scoring in their first at-bat.  John Hunter's double scored Brandon Mack to give Chowan a 1-0 lead.  Wingate answered back in the home half of the first, scoring five runs to regain the lead.  The Bulldogs shut out the Hawks in their next at-bat and used a four run second inning to take a commanding 9-1 lead. 
 
Tyler Burden singled up the middle to start off the fifth inning for the Hawks, and was eventually scored off of a single from Austin Hall.  The Bulldogs answered back in the home half of the inning by plating three runs, and held on to the lead to take the 12-2 win. 
 
Ryan Moore took the loss in the first game, surrendering nine earned runs in just over one inning of work. Josh Catalano finished the first game 2-3, along with Hall and Hunter each tallying a hit and an RBI. 
 
The Hawks out-hit the Bulldogs 6-5 in the nightcap, but it was Wingate that pulled away with the 4-0 victory.  
 
Wingate used the home half of the first inning to plate two runs, scoring off a ground ball to the left side and a wild pitch.  The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second to earn the 4-0 advantage. 
 
Four runs would be all Wingate would need, as they shut the Hawks out for the remainder of the game. George Mazza went the distance for Chowan , giving up five hits over the course of six innings.  CJ Harris picked up the win on the mound for the Bulldogs.  Mack and Moore each collected two hits in the loss.  
 
Chowan falls to 1-5 on the season after Wednesday's loss, while Wingate improves to 3-2.  The Hawks head back to Murfreesboro to host Mercyhurst in a three game series on February 9th and 10th.  First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
