BOX SCORE The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 46-42 decision to the Virginia University of Lynchburg Lady Dragons on Tuesday evening in the Helms Center.
Janelle Murphy led Chowan with 10 points in the contest, followed by
Danielle Coleman who scored seven points. The Hawks fall to 4-16 after Tuesday's loss.
Talaya Lynch nailed a three pointer at the 13:11 mark in the first half to give the Hawks a 12-5 lead. The seven point lead was their their largest of the game. Chowan traded baskets with Virginia University of Lynchburg for the remainder of the half, and
Naima Harrington hit a lay-up for the Hawks to tie the game 22-22 heading into halftime.
In the second stanza, D.D. Porter's jumper at the 19:03 mark gave the Lady Dragons a 24-22 lead over the Hawks. Virginia University of Lynchburg set the pace for the remainder of the contest, never trailing in the second half.
A 9-0 run by the Lady Dragons with 7:15 left in the game put the Hawks behind 43-31. Murphy's three pointer and two made foul shots brought the Hawks within two to make the score 44-42 with 14 seconds remaining. Virginia University of Lynchburg grabbed the momentum after a Chowan foul led to the Lady Dragons sinking two free throws to grab the 46-42 victory.
After the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-16 overall, while the Lady Dragons improve to 16-9. Chowan heads to Elizabeth City on Saturday to take on the Lady Vikings in a CIAA Northern Division match-up. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
