Hawks Battle to Split with Coker College

Bobby Mason earned the Hawks' first win of the season on Sunday
 
MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with Coker College to round out the four game series with the Cobras.  The Hawks fell to Coker 11-3 in the first game, and recovered to take game two 5-4. 
 
In Sunday's first game, Evan Hart held the Cobras scoreless through four innings before running into trouble.  Coker used singles from Brinley Griffin, Fico Kondla and Keith Wolf to score three runs in the fifth.  The Cobras continued their offensive push in the sixth inning plating eight more runs. 
 
The Hawks scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh with hits from Josh Catalano, Drew Mason, and Josh MartinEvan Seymour and Will Gurganus each were hit by pitches to plate two more runs for the Hawks.  Chowan was unable to score after that point, falling to Coker 11-3 in game one.  Josh Catalano and Drew Mason each went 2-3 in the loss. 
 
Freshman Bobby Mason picked up the Hawks' first win of the season in the nightcap after pitching 3 2/3 innings, surrendering one run on two hits.  Chowan scored in the bottom of the second with Drew Mason's triple followed by a single from Tyler Burden to start the inning.  Burden scored on a Cobras' error later in the inning to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. 
 
The Hawks plated two more runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead. 
 
Carter Siweck came in for the Hawks in relief and closed the door on the Cobras with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth to earn his first save of the season. 
 
Coker tried to make a comeback late in the game, plating three runs in the final three innings, but the Hawks were able to keep the Cobras at bay. 
 
D. Mason and Burden both went 2-3 in the 5-4 win over the Cobras in game two.  D. Mason and Burden combined to knock in three RBI in the victory.  Colby Wiggins was a perfect 3-3 in the nightcap. 
 
Chowan travels to Wingate University to face-off against the Bulldogs in a nonconference doubleheader on February 6th.  First pitch is slated for 2:00pm.  The Hawks return to Hawkins field on February 9th to host Mercyhurst in a three game series.  First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
