Hawks Upend Virginia Union in Home Finale

Talaya Lynch netted 37 points in Saturday's Senior Day victory.
MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up a CIAA Northern Division victory over the visiting Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University.  Talaya Lynch had a monster game in her final home game for the Blue and White, leading all scorers in the contest with 37 points.  Naima Harrington added 10 points in the victory. 

The Lady Panthers were led by Ashle Freeman with 22 points and Pareess Davis and Danielle Ferguson with 13 points apiece in the loss. 

The Hawks had a narrow 12-9 lead midway through the first half after a three pointer from Lynch.  The Lady Panthers stayed close on Chowan's heels, but a made free throw at the 5:10 mark from T'Arra Cutting gave the Hawks a commanding 33-25 lead.   Virginia Union fought back to pull within one point at halftime (33-32). 

A made three pointer from Lynch with 9:46 left in the game gave the Hawks a 46-44 point lead.  The Hawks never trailed after that point, with Lynch pacing the Hawks with 18 points in the second half.  Her made free throw with :47 left in the game allowed Chowan to take a 67-57 lead over the Lady Panthers.

The Hawks closed out the regular season with a 71-57 win over Virginia Union in their home finale.  Chowan seniors T'Arra Cutting, Danielle Coleman, Talaya Lynch, and Karina Monroe were recognized prior to tip-off.  Chowan heads into the CIAA Tournament next week with a 5-20 overall record, and 5-11 finish in league play. 

The Lady Panthers take off for Charlotee, NC posting a 12-13 overall mark, and 9-7 record in CIAA play.
