BOX SCORE The visiting Lady Trojans of Virginia State University snuck past the Chowan University women's basketball team 54-50 in the Helms Center on Wednesday evening.
Talaya Lynch led the Hawks with 18 pionts in the loss, and
Janelle Murphy chipped in eight points.
Lamesha Deal led the Lady Trojans and all scorers in the contest with 21 points, and came one rebound shy of a double-double in the CIAA Northern Division match-up.
Virginia State set the pace in the first half and led the Hawks until Murphy's three pointer at the 5:00 mark allowed the Hawks to gain a narrow 22-21 lead. Chowan maintained control and took a 28-27 lead heading into halftime.
Deal's lay-up one minute into the second half put the Lady Trojans back on top 30-29. The Hawks remained on the heels of the Lady Trojans, but trailed Virginia State for the remainder of the contest. Chowan came within two points after a lay-up from
Summer Curtis with nine seconds left in the game, but the Lady Trojans netted four of four free throws to close out the game with the 54-50 victory.
The Hawks fall to 4-18 overall and 4-9 in the CIAA after Wednesday's loss. The Lady Trojans improve to 11-12 overall and 4-9 in league play. Chowan will travel to Bowie, MD on February 16
th to take on the Lady Bulldogs in another CIAA Northern Division match-up. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
