MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University baseball team used a four run fourth inning to pick up a 5-1 victory over #15 Mercyhurst on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks scored five runs off of 12 hits en route to the victory.
Ryan Moore went the distance for the Hawks, pitching all nine innings and collecting eight strikeouts to cap off the three game series with a win. Moore scattered four hits throughout the contest. Matthew Jimenez took the loss on the mound for the Lakers.
Mercyhurst got on the board first in the game as Jake Marinelli's RBI single scored Adam Urschel to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks took a commanding lead in the home half of the fourth, using five hits to gain a 4-1 advantage.
Drew Mason singled to right center to start the inning.
Tyler Burden walked and Mason advanced to third on a wild pitch to set the stage for
Evan Seymour's sacrifice fly to knot the game 1-1. The Hawks took a 2-1 lead after Wiggins' RBI single to right center.
Chowan capped off their four inning rally with RBI doubles from
Josh Catalano and
Brandon Mack. Consistent pitching and solid defense shut-out the Lakers for the remainder of the game.
The Hawks extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh when
Justin Shockley's double deep to left center scored
Evan Holton.
All but one Hawk in the line-up had a hit in Sunday afternoon's game. Catalano paced the Hawks at the plate as he went 3-4 in the victory. Chowan improves to 2-7 after Sunday's win while Mercyhurst moves to 2-1.
The Hawks travel to UNC-Pembroke on February 12
th to take on the Braves. First pitch is slated for 3:00pm.
