BOX SCORE The Chowan University women's basketball team fell to the #18 Shaw University Lady Bears 79-50 on Saturday afternoon in a CIAA crossover match-up.
Talaya Lynch came just one rebound shy of a double-double for the second time this season as she led the Hawks with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Four Lady Bears tallied double digit points in the contest: Sequoyah Griffin (18), Ronika Ransford (17), Adana David (11) and Kearah Jeffreys (10). Taylor Dalrymple collected 10 rebounds in the loss.
Shaw is currently ranked #18 and are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions.
The Hawks got on the board first in the game after a free throw from
T'Arra Cutting. A jumper from Shaw's Adana David put the Lady Bears up 2-1. With the Hawks up 5-4 with 18:03 left in the first half Shaw used a 14-0 run to take an 18-5 lead. Chowan got back on the board just under the 13:00 mark with a lay-up and free throw from
Shanice Henry.
An 8-0 run from the Lady Bears gave Shaw a 26-8 advantage with 5:19 left in the first half. The Hawks outscored Shaw 12-7 in the last five minutes of the half to make the score 33-20 as the teams headed into the locker room at halftime.
Shaw's Crystal Harris sunk a lay-up to open up the second half. The Lady Bears never looked back from that point on, maintaining a double digit lead throughout the duration of the contest. With Shaw up 54-36 with 11:50 to play, the Hawks used a 6-0 run to pull within 12 points of the Lady Bears. Shaw shut the door on Chowan's offense to snag a 26 point lead at the 5:27 mark.
The Hawks were unable to answer back and Shaw walked away with the 79-50 win.
After Saturday's loss, the Hawks fall to 0-11 overall on the season and 0-3 in league play. The Lady Bears improve to 9-2overall and move to 1-1 in the CIAA.
Chowan returns to action on Monday when they host the St. Augustine's University Lady Falcons in a CIAA crossover match-up. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
