Hawks' Historic Night Leads to 27-3 Victory Over Fayetteville State

Elliot Smalls ran for 82 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's win.
MURFREESBORO, NC-Saturday's game at Garrison Stadium proved to be a historic occasion.  The Chowan University football team defeated Fayetteville State University on Saturday evening for the first time in school history and as part of the CIAA.  The 27-3 victory pulls Chowan to 3-2 and 2-0 in CIAA play.

The 3-2 start to the 2012 season is the first time Chowan has been over .500 at the halfway point of the season since 1999.  Additionally, Saturday's game was the first game since 2005 (vs. Southern Virginia), that the Hawks have not allowed a touchdown in a game.

After the game, Head Coach Tim Place commented, “Today's win was a quality effort.  Anytime you beat Fayetteville State it's a good day.  Today's win was far from perfect, but I thought our kids competed well.  It's a good day to be part of Chowan Football.”

Chowan's defense was certainly an integral part of the win, allowing a single field goal against a Fayetteville State offense that averaged 23.3 points per game heading into Saturday's match-up.  Jason Ampy led the defense with 13 total tackles in the victory (two solo, 11 assisted).  Anthony Joffrion and TJ Batchelor each collected 10 assists in the win.  Batchelor also added two sacks in the contest, contributing to a season total of 9 sacks.

Cameron Stover led the Hawks, throwing for two touchdowns and completing 15-28 passes for 230 yards.  For Fayetteville, Andreas Hudson and Chauncey Concepcion combined for 12-32 completed passes and 109 yards.

Elliot Smalls had an outstanding performance for the Hawks on Saturday, rushing for 82 yards and a touchdown.  Ryan Nolan collected 82 receiving yards in the win, catching two touchdown passes to spark the Hawks' offense.

Chowan grabbed the momentum right away, blocking and recovering a Fayetteville punt just five minutes into the game.  The Hawks were not able to capitalize on the next drive, mustering only a two yard gain as a result of three incomplete passes and an offside penalty.

Batchelor picked up his first sack of the evening with 9:17 left in the quarter, forcing Concepcion back 12 yards.  But the Broncos weren't able to get anything going on offense, and were forced to punt.

With 7:54 remaining in the first quarter, Cameron Stover completed a 12 yard pass to Ryan Nolan to get the first down for Chowan.  Elliot Smalls picked up a seven yard rush to bring the ball to the Fayetteville State 19 yard line.  Stover connected with Nolan again for a 19 yard touchdown pass to give Chowan a 6-0 lead over the Broncos.  The point after attempt from Alex Noboa was good, giving the Hawks a 7-0 edge over Fayetteville State.

The Broncos answered back with a 45 yard field goal from Antonio Mayo with 3:57 left in the first quarter.  The first quarter ended with Chowan maintaining the 7-3 lead.

Stover got the offense started in the second quarter with a seven yard pass to Antjuan Randall, followed by a six yard pass to Jermaine Wade.  A 49 yard pass to Randall gave the Hawks the first down on the Fayetteville State 27 yard line, but an offside call brought it back to the 32.  On the next play, Williams rushed for five yards, followed by an 11 yard rush from Smalls to give the Hawks the first down.  Smalls' three yard rush brought the Hawks to the ten yard line, and Stover found Nolan once again, completing a ten yard touchdown pass to give the Hawks a 13- 3 lead.  Noboa made good on the point after attempt.

Both teams failed to score for the remainder of the first half.  The Broncos and the Hawks returned to the field after halftime facing incessant rain that lingered for the remainder of the contest.

With 12:16 left in the third quarter, Fayetteville State's Antonio Mayo tried to get the Broncos on the board again, attempting a 44 yard field goal.   Mayo's kick was short, and Fayetteville was unable to capitalize on their first drive.

Stover threw a 41 yard pass to JR Williams to give the Hawks' a first down on their first play of the drive.  Smalls followed up with a 25 yard rush, and a personal foul from Fayetteville State brought the ball to the four yard line.  Randall rushed for four yards into the end zone and Noboa's point after attempt was good, allowing the Hawks to pull ahead 21-3.

With 3:52 left in the third quarter, Chowan's Aeon Blake recovered a fumble to build to the adding momentum for the Hawks.

Smalls ran for a total of seven yards on the next two plays to start off Chowan's drive.  Smalls then ran for what appeared to be a 56 yard touchdown, but an illegal block by Chowan brought the ball back to the 42 yard line.  Adrian Ferns rushed for 10 yards to regain the first down for Chwoan, and a personal foul by Fayetteville brought the ball to the 17 yard line.  Smalls took it from there, running for 17 yards to score the touchdown for Chowan with 1:43 left in the third quarter.  Noboa missed the point after attempt, his first miss of the season.

Both teams failed to score in the fourth quarter.

Chowan moves to 3-2 on the 2012 season, and 2-0 in CIAA play.  Fayetteville State falls to 1-4 on the year, and 0-2 in league play.  Tim Place and his squad will get back to work in preparation for next Saturday's game against Bowie State University.  Tim Place added, “Bowie will be ready to play, and we need to be ready to play.  Games are won Monday through Thursday and we will work hard this week to prepare for next week's game.”

Kick-off is slated for 6:00pm.
