ETTRICK, VA- The Chowan University volleyball team defeated the Virginia State Lady Trojans on Monday evening. The 3-2 win pulls Chowan to a 9-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 record in the CIAA.
Nikira Fults had a stand-out night for the Hawks, pacing the squad with 17 kills in the victory.
Monica Ruffin wasn't far behind with 16 kills, and
Karina Monroe had 10 kills.
Callie Armistead collected a total of 42 assists to help fuel the Hawks' offensive attack.
Monday's contest was evenly matched, going down to the wire on each set. Chowan captured the first set 25-23 despite being down by as many as five points at one time. Trailing 11-16, Chowan took advantage of several Lady Trojan attack errors while
Nikira Fults,
Monica Ruffin and
Karina Monroe led the offense to come back to take set one.
The Hawks easily took set two 25-16. After giving up the first point in the set, Chowan regained the lead and never looked back. The Lady Trojans were plagued with attack and set errors, helping propel the Hawks to secure the second set.
Set three was a different story. The Lady Trojans warmed up to win the set 25-23 thanks to a solid offensive effort from Whitley Bradley, Jasmine Davis, and Aubree Parker. Bradley led the Lady Trojans with 16 kills on the evening, along with Davis and Parker who chipped in with 12 apiece.
The Lady Trojans were able to keep the momentum going in their favor into the fourth set. With the score tied 5-5, Bradley and Parker teamed up for a collection of kills to give the lead back to Virginia State. The Lady Trojans kept the lead for the remainder of the set, cruising to a 25-18 victory.
The Hawks rallied back in the fifth set to secure the 15-13 win. Trailing 2-0,
Nikira Fults had a key kill to swing the momentum back in favor of the Hawks. Chowan was able to take advantage of several errors by the Lady Trojans combined with a relentless offensive attack from Fults, Ruffin and Monroe.
The Lady Trojans fall to 4-6 on the season and 4-1 in league play. The Hawks travel to Wilson, NC for a rematch with Barton on Wednesday evening. Match time is set for 7:00pm.
