SALISBURY, NC- The Chowan University football team had a strong showing today in their season opener against the Livingstone College Blue Bears. With the 70-35 win over Livingstone, the Hawks set a new record for points scored in a half (49), and in a game (70).
Cameron Stover had a stellar game for CU today. He opened the game with a touchdown pass to
Tim Hanson.
Alex Noboa made the score 7-0 Hawks after splitting the uprights on the point after attempt.
With 4:34 left in the first quarter, Stover threw another touchdown pass to wide receiver
Robert Holland. The extra point kick was good from Noboa to take the Hawks to 14-0 lead early in the game.
After Chowan's
TJ Batchelor recovered a fumble, Stover found Holland again with 2:08 left in the first half. Holland scored his second touchdown of the game for the Hawks, followed by another clean extra point kick from Noboa.
With just under one minute remaining in the first quarter, Livingstone was able to get on the board to take the score to 21-7. Stover took matters into his own hands with 13:51 left in the second half, and ran the ball in for a touchdown. The Bears would come back again almost immediately with another touchdown from Anthony Holland to make the score 28-14.
From there, the Hawks' offense really took off. Stover threw to Holland again to complete the touchdown pass, and Noboa came through with another extra point. Livingstone's Javon Williams scored a touchdown shortly after, and the kick was good, taking the score to 35-14 with 8:04 left in the first half.
Senior
Adrian Ferns added a touchdown, and Noboa's kick was good, resulting in a 42-21 lead for the Hawks with just under four minutes remaining the first half. With 31.6 seconds left in the first half, Hanson scored a touchdown for the Hawks.
With the score going into halftime at 49-21, the Hawks set a new school record for points scored in the first half.
The Bears scored first after the half, making the score 49-28, but the Hawks did not let up in their offensive attack. Ferns scored again for CU, and Noboa's consistency shined through with another clean extra point kick from the sophomore. With 13:16 left in the game, the Blue Bears would strike again to make the score 56-35.
The Hawks would score three consecutive touchdowns by
Adrian Ferns,
Bryan Harris, and
Elliot Smalls in the fourth quarter en route to setting a school record of points scored in a game with 70.
With a final score of 70-35, the Hawks move to 1-0 on the short season, and the Blue Bears fall to 0-1. Chowan will head to Lexington, VA next weekend to take on Virginia Military Institute. Game time is set for 1:30pm on Saturday.
