CU Takes Tough Loss to #5 Clayton State University

Morrow, GA-  BOX SCORE The Chowan University women's basketball team fell to Clayton State University 74-28 at the Loch Shop Classic hosted by Clayton State University on Saturday evening.  The Lakers are currently ranked #5 in NCAA DII and move to 4-0 after Saturday's win. 
 
Chowan's leading scorer Janelle Murphy collected eight points in the loss, and Kaela Nelson collected 10 rebounds.
 
Clayton State's Drameka Griggs had 14 points in the win, and Arkia Armstrong, Shacamra Jackson and Kayla Mobley each had 12 points in the victory. 
 
Chowan trailed the entire game, allowing the Lakers to score 30 points off turnovers, and 10 second chance points. 
 
Down 13-0 six minutes into the game, Karina Monroe sunk two free throws to put the Hawks on the board.  Courtney Smith followed up with a jumper after a layup from the Lakers' Jessica Covington to make the score 15-4.  Turnovers plagued the Hawks in the first half, allowing Clayton State to take a 33-12 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. 
 
The Lakers came out firing in the second half.  Clayton State's Kayla Pryce's layup  put the Lakers up 35-12, and a free throw from T'Arra Cutting made the score 35-13.  After that point,  Clayton State's 13-0 run allowed the Lakers to pull ahead 48-13 with 15:05 remaining in the game. 
 
The Hawks struggled to pull a run together on offense, scoring 15 points in the remainder of the contest, 10 of which came from made foul shots.  Arkia Armstrong and Drameka Griggs teamed up to lead the Lakers to a 74-28 victory over Chowan. 
 
The Hawks fall to 0-5 on the 2012-13 season after Saturday's loss.  They will hit the court again on Sunday when they take on North Georgia College and State University.  Tip-off is set for 1:30 pm.  Live stats and game notes for the contest are available HERE.
