BOX SCORE The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 46-41 decision at home on Tuesday evening in a non-conference match-up against the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls. Trailing by nine midway through the second half, the Hawks battled to pull within 3 points of the Golden Bulls with 20 seconds left in the contest. Chowan was unable to tie the game, allowing Johnson C. Smith to earn their first win of the season.
Janelle Murphy led the way again for Chowan, scoring 15 points, 12 of which were three pointers.
T'Arra Cutting chipped in seven points in the loss.
Danielle Coleman hauled in 10 rebounds, and
Karina Monroe collected seven.
Johnson C. Smith's Brittany Dorsett led all scorers with 15 points in the win.
Cutting opened the game with a three pointer to give the Hawks the lead just 15 seconds into the game. Dorsett drained three shots behind the three point arc and Deanna Downer netted two free throws to give the Golden Bulls an 11-3 advantage just under three minutes into the game.
Chowan hung with Johnson C. Smith, trading buckets until 3:14 remained in the first half and Briya Dancer drained a three pointer to give the Golden Bulls a 27-19 advantage.
Janelle Murphy's lay-up added two points for the Hawks, but Chante' Bell's three point bucket gave the Golden Bulls a 30-21 lead heading into halftime.
Chowan trailed Johnson C. Smith throughout the second half but managed to pull within two points after
Danielle Coleman's lay-up made the score 40-38 with 4:22 left in the game. Johnson C. Smith's Dorsett netted two free throws to give the Golden Bulls a 42-38 advantage, but
Janelle Murphy's three pointer narrowed Johnson C. Smith's lead to a single point. LaKendra Wilkerson sunk two free throws to give the Golden Bulls a 44-41 lead with 2:21 left to play.
Karina Monroe grabbed a key rebound after a missed three pointer from Dorsey with 25 seconds left in the game. A quick time out was called, and the Hawks set up their half court offense for the game tying shot. A turnover gave the ball back to Johnson C. Smith as the clock wound down. A foul by Chowan allowed Dorsett to take two free throws. She made good on both attempts and the Golden Bulls walked away with the 46-41 victory.
The Hawks fall to 0-4 on the 2012-13 season, while the Golden Bulls move to 1-3. Chowan heads to Marrow, GA this weekend for the Clayton State University Invitational. They take on Clayton State on December 1
st at 5:30 pm and North Georgia College and State University on December 2
nd at 1:30 pm.
