MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University Athletic Department is set to host the Hall of Fame Game and Banquet on Saturday, November 3rd.  Five former student-athletes will be introduced at halftime of the football game, starting at 1:00 pm versus Lincoln University (PA). Those five will be inducted into the Hall of Fame officially at the banquet hosted in Thomas Cafeteria at 5:00pm. This year's class includes Robin Hoey (class of 1979), Al Pierce (class of 1955), Johnny Warren (class of 1955), Jeff Whitaker (class of 1989), and Spencer White (class of 1967).

Robin Hoey
Robin Hoey came to Chowan College in the fall of 1977 from Lawndale, North Carolina after graduating from Burns Senior High School. When he set out for college early that same fall in the VW Beetle his father had given him, his path was supposed to lead him to Belmont-Abbey College.  Instead he drove past the Belmont-Abbey College exit sign on the interstate and kept driving east until he hit Murfreesboro and Chowan College.  Although he had been promised an athletic scholarship by Belmont-Abbey to continue his basketball career, something in his gut pulled him to Chowan.

Chowan College and then-head coach Jerry Smith thanked their stars for Hoey's arrival as he made a name for himself and his team during his two year stint.

In his first season Hoey helped the team to a 20-8 overall record and went undefeated at home. He was named to the All-Conference and All-Region X teams and averaged 13.0 points a game. His sophomore season was much like the first only he was also named an NJCAA All-American and served as the team's captain.

Hoey continued his playing career at American University in Washington, D.C. His court talent got him on the All-Conference Team his junior and senior seasons. He played under Gary Williams while at American. After helping American to some of its best-ever seasons,  Hoey had a stint in the NBA with the Washington Bullets and in the CBA with the Albany Patrons where he played under Phil Jackson.

In 1986 Hoey joined the Metro D.C. Police Department. His honors and accomplishments while serving the Metro D.C. Police Department have earned him ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain.  He has served in many special units including the Narcotics Task Force, Cold Case Homicide, Robbery-Arson Unit, Auto Theft Division, and in Youth Violence Prevention.

He currently serves as an Inspector-Field Commander for the Patrol Services Division and is his 27th year with the Metro DC Police. He is father to a 10 year old son.  He currently resides in Forestville, Maryland.

Al Pierce
Al Pierce came to Chowan College in the fall of 1955 as a touted local football talent from nearby Ahoskie High School. The Colerain, North Carolina native was so enthusiastic about the game of football he was known to ride his bicycle 30 miles round trip from Colerain to Ahoskie for practice each day. Once his family settled in Ahoskie, Pierce's talents began to shine through. He played both offense and defense for the then Ahoskie High School Indians. His gridiron prowess caught the attention of Chowan's then-head coach, Herb Appenzeller.

Pierce played two seasons for the then-Braves helping them post two great records. In fact, in his first season of collegiate football he helped the team to an 8-1 overall record and two bowl game victories over Newport News Apprentice and Fork Union Military Academy.

Pierce graduated from Chowan in 1957 and entered the Army. He continued with his football career with the Fort Knox Post Team. He turned out to be a great offensive threat for the Post Team after leading the squad in scoring for the first five games of the season.

Pierce left the military in 1958 and joined the ranks of the civilian world where he experienced much success in the banking industry. In 1960, Pierce was transferred from his banking post in Virginia to Concord, North Carolina. He met and married Donna Aileen Cantwell and settled into the Concord area.

For 36 years Pierce worked in finance, city government, and commercial banking. He also held a Real Estate license. He went into business for himself overseeing the management of a construction company and a mortgage company.

Pierce was married to the late Donna Cantwell Pierce for 36 years. He resides in Concord, N.C.

Johnny Warren
Johnny Warren came to Chowan in the fall of 1954 from Rocky Mount, North Carolina and Rocky Mount High School. He was a standout football player for the Rocky Mount Blackbirds and played under Legendary N.C. Coach EE Adkins.  Warren racked up the yardage as a running back, which caught the eye of many college coaches.

The All-State running back took his talents to East Carolina University but after one season with the Pirates, he made his way to Murfreesboro and Chowan College. In his first season with the then-Braves, Warren ran for 1,009 yards, a new program single-season record. He also accounted for 14 touchdowns in that same season.

He was named to the NJCAA All-State Team in both his freshman and sophomore seasons at Chowan. In 1955 he helped the team to an 8-1 record and two bowl victories (Newport News Apprentice, Fork Union).

Following his career at Chowan, Warren joined the Army. He participated on a service football squad while stationed in Japan.  He played for the Yokoto Raiders at Yokoto Air Base for two seasons and once again proved himself on the football field.

After serving in the Army, Warren began a long successful career in banking before his retirement in 1998 as Vice President with Centura Bank.

Jeff Whitaker
Jeff Whitaker grew up in Battleboro, North Carolina and attended North Edgecombe High School in Leggett. He was a three sport athlete and lettered in baseball, basketball, and football. His athletic prowess garnered the attention of many college coaches but one in particular was Chowan College's then-head c oach, Bob Burke. Burke recruited Whitaker to Chowan where the two helped build one of the most successful teams in the program's history.

Whitaker played two seasons with the Braves. During his freshman season he was the starting point guard and helped take his team to the Sweet Sixteen of the NJCAA in Hutchinson, Kansas. His sophomore season he led the team in assists and steals and served as a team captain. Whitaker helped the then-Braves at an amazing 53-13 two year record.

Whitaker continued his playing career at East Carolina University (1989-1992). He earned a starting position in his junior season as a point guard for the Pirates but suffered a season ending back injury in his senior season.

Whitaker received his B.S. in Criminal Justice from ECU and after graduation was hired by the Pitt County Juvenile Detention Center as a youth counselor. He spent seven years in that position before accepting a full-time position with Belk as a loss prevention officer. Whitaker now serves as the Loss Prevention Manager for Belk in Raleigh, N.C., a position he has held for the last 10 years.

Spencer White
Spencer White came to Chowan in the fall of 1965 from nearby Bertie County High School. The four-sport Bertie High School star played two years under then-head coach Jim Garrison at Chowan College. Garrison took pride in recruiting local talent and was excited to see White show up for practice in the fall of 1965.

White played two seasons with the then-Braves and in 1966 earned All-Conference honors. His football days continued as he was accepted to Temple University. He spent two seasons on the gridiron with the Owls, starting both seasons. He helped the team to a 1967 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship.

White's love for the athletics kept him in the game so to speak. After earning his degree from Temple, White picked up the passion for coaching. He was asked to stay on to help coach the 1969 Temple Freshman football squad where he helped the team to a perfect 6-0 record.

Although he spent three years in Pennsylvania, North Carolina was still his home state. He returned to his home state in the Rocky Mount area. He spent five seasons at Northern Nash High School (1970-1975) and accumulated a 40-17 overall record as the football coach. He also served as the wrestling coach and amassed a 42-15 record over five years. He had stints at Southern Nash, Columbia, and Perquimins High Schools before settling in at his alma mater, Bertie County High School, in 1989.
