Green Announces Two NLI Signees for Volleyball
MURFREESBORO - Chowan University's Head Volleyball Coach, Peter Green, announced today two signees for his incoming class of new players. Karina Monroe and Ashanti Shapiro have both signed National Letters of Intent to play volleyball at Chowan University in the fall.
Monroe hails from Spotsylvania, Virginia and is a recent graduate of Courtland High School. The 6'0'' middle blocker will help sure up the front line for the Hawks next season. "I am looking forward to Karina coming in and adding size to our front row. She has great blocking ability along with a great offense," stated Green on Monroe's signing.
Monroe has solid high school and club level playing experience that will help her compete right away for the Hawks. In her senior season at Courtland she was named All Area by the Free-Lance Star, All Region, and Honorable Mention All-State. She also set a new school record for points in a season (388) in her senior season.
Shapiro comes to Chowan by way of Texas. She is a graduate of Chapin High School in El Paso, Texas. She will join her former high school teammate Desaray Turner and be one of three players on the roster from the state of Texas. Along with her playing experience at Chapin High School Shapiro was a member of the Rapid Fire Volleyball Club. "Ashanti is a strong player and will add to our front row this season. She is a multifacted utility player who will offer a solid outside attack and a strong block," said Green.
"Both players have extensive club experience that will turn out to help us this coming season in many ways. They have played at high levels on the local, regional, and national levels," continued Green.
Green will lead his squad on to the court in August as they open the season with the 3rd Annual Janet Collins Invitational. For more information on the 2009 playing schedule, find the Schedule and Results link under the volleyball section of this website.
