MURFREESBORO - Head Volleyball Coach, Peter Green, released today the 2009 volleyball schedule which will feature the Hawks inaugural season playing as a full member of the CIAA. Green and his squad have been prepping for this opportunity since the announcement of Chowan's full admittance to the league in October 14th of this past year. The Hawks will become full members on July 1st and will play in their first season as a member of the CIAA this fall.
The Hawks open the playing season with the
Third Annual Janet Collins Invitational August 28th. The three-day tournament will feature five teams including St. Pauls, Allen University, St. Andrews College, Lincoln University (PA), and the Hawks.
Following the JC Invite the Hawks will host NC Wesleyan College on September 1st. NC Wesleyan is a member of the USA South Conference and the match will be played at 6:00pm in the Helms Center. Chowan will hit the road for the first time to play in the Kutztown University Volleyball Classic September 4th-5th. Opponents and times have yet to be released for the two-day tournament.
The Hawks will open their league play with a road match at Shaw University on September 9th before traveling to Virginia State University September 13th-15th for a CIAA Volleyball Round-Up featuring Elizabeth City State, Virginia State, Virginia Union, Bowie State, and St. Pauls College.
The Hawks will host their first CIAA match on September 24th when the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls come to the Helms Center for a 6:00pm match. After traveling to play Virginia Union and Virginia State September 26th in a tri-match, the Hawks will host four straight home matches with Shaw, the University of the District of Columbia, Livingstone University, and Barton College.
The Hawks will play in a non-conference tri-match on October 17th when they travel to North Greenville University. They will play the Crusaders as well as Lincoln Memorial University (TN) and then travel to Wilson, NC on October 20th to face off against Barton College.
The Hawks will round out the regular season with two home CIAA matches on October 29th and 31st with Fayetteville State University and St. Augustine's College.
The top eight teams in the CIAA will have the opportunity to travel to Hampton, Virginia for the CIAA Conference Tournament the first weekend in November. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Atlantic Regionals. For a complete 2009 playing schedule,
