Box Scores vs. ECSU

ELIZABETH CITY -  Chowan was part of history tonight playing in their inaugural game of the 2008 season as a full member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. This game has been a much anticipated event on the campus of Chowan University and around the CIAA as Chowan becomes the first-ever non-HBCU to ever play as a member in the CIAA. The Hawks however were on the losing end of a 55-3 game, which saw the Vikings gain 423 yards of total offense. The Viking defense forced six Chowan turnovers, three in each half.

The Hawks came out of the locker room with a bang to start the game. Kicking off to start the game, the Hawks special teams unit forced a fumble on ECSU's kick return. Anthony Lyons recovered the fumble to set up Cline and an eventual 30-yard field for their first CIAA score on their first possession of the game. Unfornately that would be the Hawks lone score of the first half. The Hawks couldn't shake the turnover bug as junior quarterback CJ Westler tossed three interceptions in the first half, one that was returned for a touchdown and another that set up an ECSU score.

The Vikings took a 20-3 lead into the halftime period. ECSU's Curtis Rich hooked up with Dexter Manley on their first possesion of the third quarter for a 62 yard paydirt strike. After shutting the Hawks down Rich connected with Karvin Gwaltney for a 34 yard touchdown. Daniel Mendez made good on both point after attempts to put Chowan down 34-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Viking scored three unanswered touchdowns to close out the game and hand the Hawks the 55-3 loss, their first in the CIAA.

Westler showed his scrambling ability, leading the Hawks ground attack with 32 yards. Threw the air he completed 17 passes for a total of 181 yards. He connected with senior Wide receiver James Fox for 96 of those yards. Fox caught a team-high seven passes on the night.

Defensively Jaron Thorpe and Marcus Johnson each had six tackles while Phil Koch and Jomo Brown had five tackles respectively. The Hawks will travel to Saint Pauls next Saturday. That kick off is slated for 1:30pm.
