MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University Volleyball team and Head Coach Marci Jenkins announced her first signee to her 2008 class. Desaray Turner is the first player to ever sign a National Letter of Intent to play for the Hawks.
Desaray Turner is a 5'8 Outside Hitter/ Utility player from Chapin High School in El Paso, Texas. During her senior year she tallied some remarkable statistics. Over the year she compiled 287 kills which ranked her first on her team, 19 assists, 546 digs also leading her team, 28 blocks which ranked her third on her team, and also compiled 21 aces over the season. She also received many accolades as a standout player in El Paso. She made the All-tournament team for both the Americas High School Tournament and the West Texas Tournament of Champions. Also, she recently earned 2nd Team All-City (El Paso) honors.
Desaray was a leader on her team, as a captain, she led her team to a Class 4-A Bi-District championship. For her efforts she was named first team All- district and was named the district's Most Outstanding All Around Player. Desaray played club ball for the past four years with Rapidfire Volleyball and was coached in High School by Eric Soto.
Desaray is excited to become a Hawk next year. Desaray has two siblings, her brother Scott and sister Sandra, along with mother Dawn Engel and step father Ed Engel.
Head Coach Marci Jenkins said, "Desaray will be a great addition to the Hawks next season. She is extremely athletic and has a high IQ for the game."
