Nate McMillan attended Chowan College from 1982-1984. McMillan is still known as one of Chowan’s most astonishing basketball players in Chowan basketball history. He was Chowan’s first basketball First Team All-American.
McMillan completed his education at North Carolina State University. While at NC State during the 1985-1986 season, he aided the Wolfpack in their drive to a spot in the Final Eight of the NCAA Tournament by leading the club in both assists (233) and Steals (90).
After his college career McMillan was chosen by the Seattle Supersonics in the first round of the 1986 NBA Draft. He spent all twelve seasons of his NBA career with the Supersonics. During his professional career, he earned All-NBA Defensive Team Honors during both the 1991 and 1995 seasons. He led the NBA in steals during the 1993-1994 season, averaging 2.96 steals per game. McMillian co-owns the NBA’s rookie record for assists in a single game with 25.
Seattle retired McMillan's number 10 jersey in 1999 and upon retirement he moved from the court to the bench as an assistant coach for the Supersonics. His loyalty to the Supersonics team earned him the name “Mr. Sonic.”
