Tribbett Named NCCAA National Coach of the Year, Nelson Earns All Amercian Honors
MURFREESBORO - The men's basketball team wrapped up their 2007-08 campaign this past weekend after competing in the NCCAA National Tournament in Oakland City, Indiana. This trip was the team's second trip to NCCAA Nationals in three seasons. Chowan wrapped up the eight-team tournament 1-2 and finished in 4th place after beating Trinity Christian College in the opening round but falling to Spring Arbor and Dallas Baptist.
For his performance over the three-day contest freshman Charles Rhodes was named to the NCCAA National All Tournament Team. The Chapel Hill native scored 36 points over three games to earn the honor.
Head Coach Jim Tribbett, also named this year's NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year, was named the 2007-08 NCCAA National Coach of the Year. Tribbett guided the Hawks to a 13-17 overall record, a NCCAA South Region Championship, and 4th Place NCCAA National Tournament finish. This is the second time in his career that Tribbett has earned both the South Region and National Coach of the Year honors.
Sophomore guard Jaleel Nelson was named NCCAA South Region Player of the Year and NCCAA All American after finishing the season at 11.1 points an outing. The Suffolk native shot 50% from the floor this season while also grabbing 5.1 rebounds per game.
Junior Chris Kenon and freshman Layth Mansour earned NCCAA South Region Seond Team honors after turning in solid seasons. Kenon was third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.1 a game. The NCCAA South Region Tournament MVP, poured in 24 points to help lift Chowan over Pensacola Christian in the South Region Finals. Mansour led the team in rebounding at 6.1 per game while also chipping in 9.3 points an outing.
