Baseball Racks up Post Season NCCAA Honors Billy Walling named South Region Freshman of the Year
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA - After earning the NCCAA South Region Championship on Saturday the Hawks also garnered several individual NCCAA awards. Seven players earned All South Region while Billy Walling was named the Region's Freshman of the Year.
Walling set a new single season record for runs batted in this year and played both third base and first base this season. Walling headed into the tournament on Thursday hitting at a .375 clip with 12 doubles and eight homeruns. He knocked in a team high 54 runs and had a .613 slugging percentage. He was also named to the All South Region Team as a utility player.
Justin Hollingsworth earned All South Region as a catcher. The senior hit .341 with 47 RBI after starting in 45 games behind the plate this season. Hollingsworth walked a total of 37 times this season and struck out just 14 times in 138 at-bats.
PJ Sadler was named All South Region as an infielder. Sadler will leave Chowan as one of the most decorated players in program history. He owns five career records and hit .353 this season with 12 doubles, six triples, and three homeruns.
David Hughes earned All South Region as an outfielder after posting solid numbers in both centerfield and right field. He headed into the tournament hitting .400 with six doubles, six triples, and 50 hits on the season.
Joey Ryder was named All South Region as a utility player. He played both second base and third base this season. He batted .346 with a team high 18 doubles, three triples, and six homeruns.
Chowan's leading pitcher BJ Byerly was named All South Region after turning in an 8-2 season with a 3.30 ERA. Brandon Hamlett was named All South Region as a relief pitcher. The senior hurler had five saves and six wins on the season.
The Hawks sit at 34-18 overall and will represent the NCCAA South Region at the NCCAA World Series in Struthers, Ohio May 21-24th.
